ABSTRACT

The study determined the prevalence of Candida albicans in the mouth of 509 Filipino children (3 mo - 10 yrs) who did not show any detectable lesions. A sterile cotton swab was used to take materials from the mouth for mycological examination. Species of C. albicans was identified using the method of BakerspigelCandida organisms were isolated from 162 (31.8%) of the 509 children studied. C. albicans was the organisms isolated from 119 (21.4%) of these children. This finding presents a difficulty in making diagnosis of oral moniliasis. The appearance of characteristic lesions and the repeated isolation of C. albicans in large number are deemed necessary in the diagnosis of oral moniliasis

ABSTRACT

Based on the cases we are presenting, Digenia simplex seems to have a bright future as a substitute in the treatment of ascariasis and possibly of other intestinal worms. Our observations have led us to make the following conclusions: (1) The effectiveness of the drug (73.61%) holds a big promise, especially if we consider it together with other qualities that it possesses(2) The drug is non-toxic, a requisite which makes it superior to all other drugs commonly used in the local treatment of intestinal parasitism(3) The drug can be administered under any circumstances without the necessity of preparing the patient prior to the actual taking in of the medicine(4) The case of preparation and the local availability and abundance of the raw material are added advantages over those imported from other countries. (Conclusion)

ABSTRACT

An elderly, unimmunized, female patient underwent an abdomino-perineal resection operation for a Dukes class B rectal carcinoma; but, developed postoperative stenosis of the terminal sigmoid colostomy. Another operation to relieve the colostomy stricture was performed but, the patient developed fatal tetanus after the procedureThis case illustrate the importance of post-opertive tetanus as a potentially fatal complication in the aged. As it is easier to prevent than to treat, provision of prophylaxis for the patient at risks (such as those undergoing gastro-intestinal surgery) is the most important component of management. T. concentricum stands as the least frequent cause of superficial mycoses among the dermatophytesA brief description of the clinical and mycologic aspects of superficial mycoses is likewise presentedThe use of KOH with Parker superchrome blue black ink as a practical method in the demonstration of fungus elements in clinical materials is also included.
